First trip

How many days do you need in Dali?

A practical timing guide for first-time visitors deciding between a quick stop, a real trip, and a slow stay.

Dali old town roofs, Cangshan mountains, and Erhai Lake

The short answer

Two nights is enough to see the old town and one lake or mountain route. Three to four nights is the sweet spot for most travelers because it leaves room for Cangshan, Erhai, and one quieter old town such as Xizhou. A week or more changes the trip from sightseeing into a slower rhythm.

If you only have one full day

Base near Dali Old Town or the west side of Erhai. Spend the morning on Cangshan or in the old town lanes, then take a short lake-side route in the afternoon. Avoid trying to circle the whole lake unless your goal is the ride itself.

When a slow stay makes sense

Dali rewards travelers who like mornings, weather watching, walking, writing, remote work, and small repeated rituals. If that sounds like your trip, choose a base that makes daily life easy rather than chasing a new hotel every night.
